About Suthep 20 Day

Suthep 20 Day is the 21.0km trail race at HOKA Chiang Mai Thailand by UTMB 2025 (Chiang Mai, Thailand). The race starts on November 29, 2025.

Race strategy

Run the climb at race pace, build your speed on the downhill, and go all out at the finish.

  • Final 1081m descent. Save your legs to go all out on it.
  • Steep 30% wall. Control your pace and stay focused.
  • Control your HR on the first mountain, and start the final descent from 9.4km under control, then go all out near the bottom.
  • Start · 0.0km–1.3km · Race-day nerves push your heart rate up: don't follow the crowd, find your own rhythm.
  • Settle in · 1.3km–9.4km · Climb of 1062m, high point 1361m. Ease in: hold back more than feels necessary. The race is still ahead. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Home · 9.4km–20.8km · Descent of 1081m averaging 9%. Build to the finish: leave whatever you have left out on the course. Very long descent: first half under control, then even, let go only near the end. Hike the steepest pitches.

Course

By gradient, 33% of the distance is uphill, 37% downhill and 30% flat. The longest climb runs 9.4km at an average 11.3% grade (1062m of vertical). The longest descent runs 11.4km at an average 9.5% grade (1081m of vertical). The steepest climb averages 36.3% over 0.2km. The steepest descent drops at 29.7% over 0.6km. Surface: 42% trail, 33% smooth, 18% road, and 5% technical. Flat-equivalent effort: 33.7 FlatKM.

Poles

Trekking poles are worth taking: about 3.5km of the course favours them.

Quad damage

Quad damage risk is low (index 17 of 100): a few descents worth noting, none of them decisive.

  • Control your HR on the first mountain, and start the final descent from 9.4km under control, then go all out near the bottom.
  • 9.4–20.8 km · 1081 m D−, -9.5% · 0.0 km ahead → even, first half under control, let go at the end
