About E51 Panorama Trail

E51 Panorama Trail is the 41.0km trail race at Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB 2025 (Grindelwald, Switzerland). The race starts on July 19, 2025.

Race strategy

Run hard on the first mountain, but save energy for the second.

  • Big early climb with 1.6km gain. Hold your pace, save your legs for later.
  • Steep 41% wall. Control your pace and stay focused.
  • 1506m descent. Go easy, save your quads.
  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the way down from it until 28.1km, then run your race pace, and go all out on the final descent from 36.0km.
  • Start · 0.0km–1.8km · Race-day nerves push your heart rate up: don't follow the crowd, find your own rhythm.
  • Settle in · 1.8km–19.0km · Climb of 1553m, high point 2392m. Ease in: hold back more than feels necessary. The race is still ahead. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Work · 19.0km–28.1km · Descent of 1506m averaging 16%. This is where the race is built: steady, solid effort. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Fade · 28.1km–36.0km · Plus 1 more climb. Your energy fades, and that's normal: hold a steady effort and stop counting the miles. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. Running pays off here: run wherever you can. Hike the steepest pitches. Your heart rate drifts down on its own: don't chase your early-race numbers, go by feel.
  • Home · 36.0km–40.1km · Descent of 404m averaging 10%. No heroics: settle back into your own effort and hold it to the line. Long descent: keep it even and let go only near the end.

Course

The course climbs 2300m+. With 56m/km of climbing, this is a true mountain course with sustained climbs and descents. By gradient, 43% of the distance is uphill, 38% downhill and 20% flat. The longest climb runs 19.0km at an average 8.2% grade (1553m of vertical). The longest descent runs 9.1km at an average 16.5% grade (1506m of vertical). The steepest climb averages 41.0% over 0.4km. The steepest descent drops at 31.3% over 0.2km. Surface: 57% trail, 28% road, 10% smooth, and 5% technical. Flat-equivalent effort: 60.3 FlatKM.

Summits

The course also passes close to Chiemattenhubla (2029m).

Poles

Poles bring little benefit here: only about 4.4km of pole-friendly terrain.

Quad damage

Quad damage risk is moderate (index 32 of 100), with 20% of the load in the first half: 1 descent deserves a plan and a couple of downhill sessions before race day.

  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the way down from it until 28.1km, then run your race pace, and go all out on the final descent from 36.0km.
  • #1 · 19.0–28.2 km · 1506 m D−, -16.4% · 12.0 km ahead → control
  • 36.0–40.1 km · 404 m D−, -9.9% · 0.0 km ahead → even, let go at the end

Weather

On race day, start temperatures have historically ranged from 13°C to 23°C, with around 14°C at the highest point; the chance of precipitation is about 57%.
