About Wild 70

Wild 70 is the 70.0km ultra trail at Wildstrubel by UTMB 2025 (Crans-Montana, Switzerland). The race starts on September 10, 2025.

Race strategy

Hold a steady pace and save energy for every section.

  • Steep 42% wall. Control your pace and stay focused.
  • 1130m descent. Go easy, save your quads.
  • Final 1647m descent. Save your legs to go all out on it.
  • Long race. Control your HR and effort. Early mistakes cost the most.
  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the descents until 32.8km, then run your race pace, and start the final descent from 46.9km under control, then go all out near the bottom.
  • Start · 0.0km–1.8km · Race-day nerves push your heart rate up: don't follow the crowd, find your own rhythm.
  • Settle in · 1.8km–14.9km · Climb of 1192m, descent of 1130m averaging 18%. Ease in: hold back more than feels necessary. The race is still ahead. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Work · 14.9km–32.8km · Climb of 535m, climb of 590m, descent of 963m averaging 15%. Plus 1 more descent. This is where the race is built: steady, solid effort. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Fade · 32.8km–46.9km · Climb of 1704m, high point 2761m. Your energy fades, and that's normal: hold a steady effort and stop counting the miles. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. At altitude your pace drops, and that's fine. Hike the steepest pitches. Your heart rate drifts down on its own: don't chase your early-race numbers, go by feel.
  • Home · 46.9km–67.8km · Descent of 1647m averaging 8%. No heroics: settle back into your own effort and hold it to the line. Very long descent: first half under control, then even, let go only near the end. At altitude your pace drops, and that's fine. Hike the steepest pitches.

Course

By gradient, 43% of the distance is uphill, 39% downhill and 18% flat. The longest climb runs 14.1km at an average 12.1% grade (1704m of vertical). The longest descent runs 20.9km at an average 7.9% grade (1647m of vertical). The steepest climb averages 42.4% over 0.5km. The steepest descent drops at 34.1% over 0.7km. Surface: 52% trail, 25% technical, and 19% road. Flat-equivalent effort: 107.0 FlatKM.

Summits

The highest summit on the course is Blattihubel (2189m), 44.2km from the start. The course also passes close to Sillerenbühl (1976m).

Poles

Trekking poles are strongly recommended: about 12.9km of the course is steep enough for them to pay off.

Quad damage

Quad damage risk is moderate (index 46 of 100), with 64% of the load in the first half: 2 descents deserve a plan and a couple of downhill sessions before race day.

  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the descents until 32.8km, then run your race pace, and start the final descent from 46.9km under control, then go all out near the bottom.
  • #1 · 8.6–14.9 km · 1130 m D−, -17.9% · 52.9 km ahead → control
  • #2 · 26.2–32.8 km · 963 m D−, -14.7% · 35.0 km ahead → control
  • 46.9–67.8 km · 1647 m D−, -7.9% · 0.0 km ahead → even, first half under control, let go at the end
