About Stubai 100

Stubai 100 is the 100km ultra trail at Stubai Ultra Trail by UTMB 2027 (Neustift im Stubaital, Austria). The race starts on July 2, 2027 at 10:00 PM. It starts in Neustift im Stubaital. The time limit is 25 h.

Race strategy

Hold a steady pace and save energy for every section.

  • 889m descent. Go easy, save your quads.
  • Steep 44% wall. Control your pace and stay focused.
  • The finish is runnable. Save your legs to run it all the way.
  • Long race. Control your HR and effort. Early mistakes cost the most.
  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the descents until 67.8km, then run your race pace.
  • Start · 0.0km–1.7km · Race-day nerves push your heart rate up: don't follow the crowd, find your own rhythm.
  • Settle in · 1.7km–18.1km · Climb of 840m, descent of 889m averaging 10%. Ease in: hold back more than feels necessary. The race is still ahead. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Work · 18.1km–46.2km · Climb of 1138m, descent of 1212m averaging 15%, climb of 1302m, high point 2316m. This is where the race is built: steady, solid effort. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Running pays off here: run wherever you can. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Fade · 46.2km–93.6km · Descent of 776m averaging 13%, descent of 1281m averaging 15%, climb of 1127m. Plus 1 more climb and 1 descent. Your energy fades, and that's normal: hold a steady effort and stop counting the miles. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Running pays off here: run wherever you can. Hike the steepest pitches. Your heart rate drifts down on its own: don't chase your early-race numbers, go by feel.
  • Home · 93.6km–101km · 7.7km of runnable trail. No heroics: settle back into your own effort and hold it to the line. Running pays off here: run wherever you can.

Course

The course climbs 5800m+. With 58m/km of climbing, this is a true mountain course with sustained climbs and descents. By gradient, 42% of the distance is uphill, 40% downhill and 17% flat. The longest climb runs 11.4km at an average 9.9% grade (1127m of vertical). The longest descent runs 9.2km at an average 10.8% grade (986m of vertical). The steepest climb averages 44.0% over 0.4km. The steepest descent drops at 41.0% over 0.4km. Surface: 58% trail, 18% smooth, 14% road, and 10% technical. Flat-equivalent effort: 156.4 FlatKM.

Summits

The highest summit on the course is Jochkreuz (2046m), 60.2km from the start. Other named summits along the route: Waldraster Jöchl (1878m). The course also passes close to Issl (2187m).

Poles

Trekking poles are strongly recommended: about 13.7km of the course is steep enough for them to pay off.

Quad damage

Quad damage risk is high (index 62 of 100), with 49% of the load in the first half: 4 critical descents, the last of them run on already damaged legs. Downhill-specific preparation and a controlled early pace pay off here.

  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the descents until 67.8km, then run your race pace.
  • #1 · 9.0–18.1 km · 889 m D−, -9.8% · 83.2 km ahead → control
  • #2 · 31.2–39.0 km · 1212 m D−, -15.5% · 62.2 km ahead → control
  • #4 · 46.2–52.3 km · 776 m D−, -12.6% · 48.9 km ahead → control
  • #3 · 59.4–67.8 km · 1281 m D−, -15.3% · 33.5 km ahead → control
  • 84.4–93.6 km · 986 m D−, -10.8% · 7.7 km ahead → your pace
