About Tenerife Bluetrail 82K

Tenerife Bluetrail 82K is the 82.0km ultra trail at Tenerife Bluetrail by UTMB 2027 (Vilaflor, Spain). The race starts on April 10, 2027 at 06:00 AM. It starts in Vilaflor. The time limit is 18 h.

Race strategy

Hold a steady pace and save energy for every section.

  • 479m descent. Go easy, save your quads.
  • Big early climb with 1060m gain. Control your HR at altitude.
  • Final 1368m descent. Save your legs to go all out on it.
  • Long race. Control your HR and effort. Early mistakes cost the most.
  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the descents until 63.8km, then run your race pace, and start the final descent from 65.8km under control, then go all out near the bottom.
  • Start · 0.0km–2.0km · Race-day nerves push your heart rate up: don't follow the crowd, find your own rhythm.
  • Settle in · 2.0km–22.7km · Climb of 555m, descent of 479m averaging 13%, climb of 1059m. Ease in: hold back more than feels necessary. The race is still ahead. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them.
  • Work · 22.7km–43.1km · 20.5km of runnable trail, high point 2500m. This is where the race is built: steady, solid effort. Running pays off here: run wherever you can. At altitude your pace drops, and that's fine.
  • Fade · 43.1km–65.8km · Descent of 1928m averaging 9%, climb of 607m. Your energy fades, and that's normal: hold a steady effort and stop counting the miles. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Hike the steepest pitches. Your heart rate drifts down on its own: don't chase your early-race numbers, go by feel.
  • Home · 65.8km–80.1km · Descent of 1368m averaging 10%. No heroics: settle back into your own effort and hold it to the line. Very long descent: first half under control, then even, let go only near the end.

Course

The course climbs 3300m+. With 40m/km of climbing, this is a rolling, mostly runnable course. By gradient, 31% of the distance is uphill, 47% downhill and 22% flat. The longest climb runs 10.4km at an average 10.2% grade (1059m of vertical). The longest descent runs 20.6km at an average 9.3% grade (1928m of vertical). The steepest climb averages 33.7% over 1.6km. The steepest descent drops at 31.1% over 0.3km. Surface: 78% trail, 12% road, and 6% smooth. Flat-equivalent effort: 107.8 FlatKM.

Summits

The highest summit on the course is Morra del Río (2531m), 24.5km from the start. Other named summits along the route: Degollada de Guajara (2374m). The course also passes close to Morro Negro (2335m).

Poles

Poles bring little benefit here: only about 8.3km of pole-friendly terrain.

Quad damage

Quad damage risk is high (index 53 of 100), with 26% of the load in the first half: 2 critical descents, the last of them run on already damaged legs. Downhill-specific preparation and a controlled early pace pay off here.

  • Control your HR on the first mountain, save your quads on the descents until 63.8km, then run your race pace, and start the final descent from 65.8km under control, then go all out near the bottom.
  • #1 · 8.5–12.2 km · 479 m D−, -12.9% · 67.9 km ahead → control
  • #2 · 43.1–63.8 km · 1928 m D−, -9.3% · 16.4 km ahead → control
  • 65.8–80.1 km · 1368 m D−, -9.5% · 0.0 km ahead → even, first half under control, let go at the end
