About Trail 25K

Trail 25K is the 25.0km trail race at European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships 2026 (Kamnik, Slovenia). The race starts on June 6, 2026 at 08:00 AM. It starts and finishes in Kamnik. The time limit is 5 h.

Race strategy

Run hard on the first mountain, but save energy for the second.

  • Steep 31% wall. Control your pace and stay focused.
  • 722m descent. Go easy, save your quads.
  • Ease into the early runnable section, save your quads on the descents until 16.2km, then run your race pace, and go all out on the final descent from 17.3km.
  • Start · 0.0km–2.5km · Race-day nerves push your heart rate up: don't follow the crowd, find your own rhythm.
  • Settle in · 2.5km–11.2km · Climb of 872m, high point 1326m. Ease in: hold back more than feels necessary. The race is still ahead. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. Running pays off here: run wherever you can. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Work · 11.2km–17.3km · Descent of 722m averaging 15%. Plus 1 more climb. This is where the race is built: steady, solid effort. Climb by heart rate or breathing, not pace. This descent is hard on the legs: short steps, stay in control, poles if you have them. Hike the steepest pitches.
  • Home · 17.3km–25.4km · Descent of 481m averaging 6%. Build to the finish: leave whatever you have left out on the course. Long descent: keep it even and let go only near the end.

Course

The course climbs 1270m+. With 51m/km of climbing, this is a true mountain course with sustained climbs and descents. By gradient, 31% of the distance is uphill, 36% downhill and 33% flat. The longest climb runs 5.3km at an average 16.6% grade (872m of vertical). The longest descent runs 8.1km at an average 5.9% grade (481m of vertical). The steepest climb averages 34.7% over 0.4km. The steepest descent drops at 31.7% over 0.5km. Flat-equivalent effort: 37.0 FlatKM.

Summits

The course also passes close to Tamnik (1251m).

Poles

Poles bring little benefit here: only about 4.4km of pole-friendly terrain.

Quad damage

Quad damage risk is low (index 18 of 100): a few descents worth noting, none of them decisive.

  • Ease into the early runnable section, save your quads on the descents until 16.2km, then run your race pace, and go all out on the final descent from 17.3km.
  • #1 · 11.2–16.2 km · 722 m D−, -14.6% · 9.3 km ahead → control
  • 17.3–25.4 km · 481 m D−, -5.9% · 0.0 km ahead → even, let go at the end

Weather

On race day, start temperatures have historically ranged from 14°C to 21°C, with around 15°C at the highest point; the chance of precipitation is about 54%. Heavy rain of 10.0mm or more falls on about 13% of days around this date.
